Photographing Beads and Jewellery: Scale, Colour, Finish
How to photograph beads and jewellery so finish, colour and scale read true on screen, plus what to check before you buy materials.
A bead photographs true when the light is large, the camera is square to the bead, and the frame is filled by the bead itself. Scale comes from a known reference in the same plane, colour comes from a neutral grey card and a fixed white balance, and finish comes from a broad soft highlight that shows the surface without blowing it out. The hole and the finding need their own frame at higher magnification, because a screen cannot resolve what the sensor never recorded.

How do you photograph a bead so that its finish reads true?
Finish is a surface property, and surfaces are described by the shape of the highlight, not by the colour of the bead. A small hard light source gives a small hard highlight, which reads as gloss. A large diffused source gives a broad soft highlight, which reads as satin or matte. If you want the finish to read true, match the size of the light to the finish you are describing, and keep the same light for every bead in the set.
Put the bead on a matte grey card. Not white, not black. Grey gives the camera a stable reference and stops the bead from sitting in a pool of reflected light. For a glossy bead, angle the light so the highlight falls on the upper third of the sphere and the lower two thirds stay readable. For a matte bead, bring the light closer and larger so the surface shows its texture instead of a single hot spot.
A polarising filter on the lens cuts the specular reflection from glass and crystal. It also cuts the colour saturation, so you will need to add a little back in post. That is a fair trade when the alternative is a bead that reads as a white blob.
Shoot tethered if you can. A 10 mm bead on a 24 megapixel sensor is roughly 400 pixels wide at 1:1, and you cannot judge finish on the back of the camera. On a laptop screen you can see whether the highlight is clean or whether it has a hard edge that will read as a scratch.
What scale does a photograph of a small object need?
Scale is not magnification. Scale is the relationship between the bead and something the viewer already knows. A seed bead at 2 mm and a 12 mm round both need the same thing: a reference object in the same plane of focus, lit by the same light, at the same distance from the lens.
A ruler works, but a ruler is a ruler. A coin, a pencil tip, a fingertip, a standard bead cap, or a length of beading wire with a known diameter all read faster. Put the reference beside the bead, not behind it. Depth of field at macro distances is measured in millimetres, and a reference that sits 5 mm behind the bead will be soft and useless.
For a single bead, fill the frame. For a strand, show the strand in the hand or against a known length. For a finding, show the finding attached to the bead it will hold, because a jump ring alone tells the viewer nothing about the hole it has to pass through.
The screen is the final scale. A phone screen at arm's length resolves about 300 pixels per inch. If your bead occupies 200 pixels, the viewer sees a bead the size of a thumbnail. If it occupies 1200 pixels, the viewer sees the surface. Decide which question you are answering before you set the magnification.
How do you keep colour honest on a shiny material?
Shiny materials lie about colour because they reflect the room. A red bead on a white table under a warm lamp will photograph as orange with a white streak. The fix is not a better camera. The fix is a neutral environment and a fixed white balance.
Set white balance manually with a grey card in the same light as the bead. Do not use auto white balance, because the camera will chase the highlight and shift the whole frame. Shoot raw. Put a colour checker in the first frame of every setup, and use it to build a profile for that light. Then leave the light alone.
Surround the bead with black or grey card so the only light reaching it is the light you control. A tube of black card open at the front, with the light outside, kills the room. For transparent and translucent beads, backlight them on a light table with a grey card behind, and expose for the highlight so the colour reads as transmission rather than reflection.
Crystal and coated glass are the hard cases. Swarovski and Preciosa finishes shift with angle, and a single frame cannot show the full range. Shoot three frames at three angles and present them as a set. That is honest. One frame chosen for the prettiest colour is not.
The hole and the finding
The hole is the specification that decides whether the project works. Its diameter, its position, and whether it is drilled straight through or side-drilled are all things a buyer needs to see. Photograph the hole at the highest magnification your lens allows, with the bead axis parallel to the sensor. A hole photographed at an angle reads as an oval and misleads.
Light the hole from behind if the bead is translucent. Light it from the side if the bead is opaque. Put a piece of wire or a headpin through the hole in a second frame so the viewer can see the fit. A 0.6 mm hole and a 0.8 mm wire is a fact. A photograph of that fact is worth more than a paragraph.
Findings are small metal parts: jump rings, crimp beads, bead caps, clasps, ear wires. Photograph them attached. A crimp bead on a piece of beading wire, closed with crimping pliers, shows the reader what the finished join looks like. A loose crimp bead on a grey card shows nothing.
Group findings by function, not by shape. One frame for stringing, one for finishing, one for ear wires. Keep the light and the background identical across the group so the reader can compare sizes without re-reading the caption.
A working setup you can repeat
Use a table, a sheet of matte grey card, and one large diffused light at 45 degrees. Add a second card opposite the light as a fill. Put the camera on a tripod, square to the bead, at the lowest ISO the sensor offers. Use a remote release or a two second timer. Focus manually with live view magnified.
For scale, place a coin beside the bead. For colour, place a grey card in the frame and set white balance from it. For finish, adjust the distance of the light until the highlight reads the way the surface actually looks in the hand. Shoot the bead, then the hole, then the finding, in that order, without moving the camera.
Name the files with the bead size, the hole diameter and the finish. A photograph without a specification is a picture. A photograph with a specification is a record, and a record is what a buyer, a student or a magazine can use.
What to check before you buy
Before you photograph a bead, you have to know what it is. Size in millimetres, hole diameter, finish, manufacturer, and whether the colour is dyed, coated or inherent. Those are the fields that appear in a listing and the fields that appear in a caption. If the listing does not state them, ask. If the seller cannot answer, the photograph will not save the sale.
Buy a small quantity first. Photograph it. Compare it with the specification. Only then order the quantity the project needs. That order of operations costs one extra shipping charge and saves a rebuild.
